Recapturing the Long Strokes of Sexy Handwriting

Is it just me or is John Hancock’s signature the sexiest way any man has ever signed his name?

I absolutely love his signature. It’s big and bold and totally up front and center. Full of confidence, determination, strength. If a man can wield a pen with such flair and passion, imagine what else he can do with his hands! I, for one, would not mind finding out!

Seriously (actually I was being serious before) when Mr. Hancock penned his name to the Declaration of Independence, he knew he was declaring himself a traitor to mother England who had controlled the American colonies up to this point. By signing his name to the document he knew he knew he was asking for trouble, not just for the other colonists but for himself as well. So what does he do? With pen in hand he takes up the most space of anyone on this written act of rebellion, and he does it with the most amazing flourish and intentionality. And it’s just so damn sexy!

Handwriting is becoming a lost art. In the age of tweets and text messages, handwriting has been pushed aside for more seemingly technological creative advancements. I, however, refuse to give up the long strokes of sexy handwriting. Every evening, with my journals and inks and assortment of fountain pens, and a glass of my favorite Sauvignon Blanc, I pen my innermost secrets to paper, capturing every lurid detail of the day with the longest and slowest of strokes. I find myself wanting to linger long over each careful composition of every letter. There is a certain romanticism in the art of handwriting, and a reclaiming of our true inner selves. I am who I am most when I write with my pens. Strong. Sexy. Vulnerable. And very uncomplicated. That’s the me I like to be.

January 23rd is National Handwriting Day and appropriately so because that also happens to be John Hancock’s birthday. Every year since 1977 the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association has been encouraging people to take time to improve their handwriting skills and appreciate the beauty and artistry and importance of handwriting as a form of communication. The man with the sexiest signature has also given us a day to recapture the long strokes of sexy handwriting.

This year take some time just for you. Time to rest. Time to reflect. Time to renew. For me that time is every evening when I put on some quiet music, get lost in some scintillating erotica, and pen my own thoughts and feelings to paper with long, broad, sexy strokes.

My Montblanc Meisterstück Glacier Classique Fountain Pen White. I love this pen!
